We moved into this house last summer & now that warmer weather is coming, I’d like to focus some time on making the backyard look nicer. It’s small (16.5′W by 39.5′L, plus a large deck). I have no idea what to do with it & was hoping some of you might have some design ideas. I will be putting up some new fencing (I was leaning towards this bamboo fencing: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=350047135604&ssPageName=STRK:MEWA:IT&ih=022 ). I’d also like to have some flowers (I live in Hardiness Zone 6, if that helps with floral suggestions) & possibly a small pond or maybe just a pond-less waterfall (this would go back in one of the corners near the garage). Any flowers would have to be put in a raised flower bed (becaue of the dog). If you are doing raised beds, you can do just about anything. I’d go for scented flowers near the deck – sweet peas for the day, night stock (mattiola) for night time scent. Near the fence, I’d suggest some height, but not anything clinging to you new fence (if you kept the old one, I’d cover it in vines). How about mahogany colored, branching sunflowers? Leave the seeds on later to attract birds.
If you want to plant and forget (perrenials, or self-sowing plants), grab a packet of oriental poppies and valeriana boneriensis for color early and late.
If you are looking for more work, a few roses are always nice, but they need more coddling than most plants.
