I recently inherited a Japanese Juniper Bonsai tree from a friend who was moving and did not want it. It has been living inside on her office windowsill since the beginning of September. I realize these trees need a dormancy period and was wondering where would be best to place the tree in NE Ohio. I believe we are a growing zone 5. It gets below 14 degrees here, but there is often not snow on the ground. Should I put it in the ground or is it too late for that? I’m not sure my garage/basement will stay cold enough for it.
Hello,
You are correct, a Juniper does need a dormant period to survive. You can read more information about wintering bonsai trees on websites like http://www.learning2bonsai.com.
I live in the Boston are and I leave my Juniper under the porch. It’s cold, but protected from snow and harsh winds. You can keep it in an unheated Garage, but make sure that it does not get too warm and come out of dormancy. You still want to keep an eye on your tree and it may need watering during the winter – or add a little snow to the soil. Otherwise, you should be fine.
probably inside your house in a mild dark or light place

Let the pot freeze and then keep it frozen in a sheltered spot like under a deck until mid April.
